Has Google's Security Gone Too Far?

Last Updated: September 17, 2015

Security lock
Surprise, surprise: Google is making life more difficult for local business owners and online advertisers. This time, the problems have to do with Google’s new security measures, which have become markedly stricter in the last year. While tightening security is a good idea in theory, it’s been extremely problematic in execution, as it has created quite a mess for the many business owners who share access to their Google My Business accounts with their advertisers.
Here’s what you need to know about Google’s security pain points so you can avoid being locked out of your account and keep your advertising on track.

Claiming Your Listing Is a Pain

If you are the owner of your Google My Business listing, then you don’t have to worry about trying to claim it. You can easily make your online advertiser the manager of your listing. However, many Google My Business accounts are created by a hired SEO company or online advertiser; when you stop working with that company, they abandon your listing without giving you back ownership. That company still technically owns your listing, but now you don’t have access to it because you don’t know the log-in information.
Trying to claim these types of listings has always been challenging, but Google has made it even more difficult recently. When you (or a new advertiser) try to claim your listing, Google will first contact the current owner of that page. However, since the current owner is your former SEO company that no longer cares about your business, it’s unlikely to respond to Google’s request. Your listing will be stuck in limbo for at least 1-2 weeks while Google waits for a response from the owner. If there’s no response after a few weeks, Google will give you the option to claim your listing yourself by phone or e-mail—but this will only work if you have a corporate e-mail domain. If this doesn’t work, you may have to create an entirely new listing from scratch and start over.

Solution

You can avoid these delays by requesting your Google My Business account information as soon as you stop working with an online advertising provider. You may also want to consider creating an e-mail address on your company’s website domain.

Good Luck Logging In to Your Own Account

“But if I know my username and password, shouldn’t I be in the clear?” Technically, yes. However, you may still run into problems logging in if you don’t regularly visit your account. Google takes any significant absence (we haven’t pinpointed the exact time period yet, but it seems to be at least several months) as a sign that your account has been compromised. As a result, Google will grill you with hyper-specific security questions to make sure it’s really you signing in. This may also happen if you forget your password or try logging in from a new device or physical location.
Some of these questions include:

  • On what date did you create this account?
  • What other Google apps and products do you use?
  • What is the date when you first started using these products?

In many cases, Google may also ask you for your mobile phone number so it can text a PIN to you, which you will then have to verify manually. Of course, because the vast majority of users won’t be able to recall the exact day and month that they created their accounts, the authentication process can get complicated and frustrating very quickly.

Solution

Be sure to log in to your Google My Business account on a regular basis (at least once per month). Not only will this prevent Google from thinking your account’s been compromised, but it will also help you remember your username and password. You can also turn off your two-step authentication process (which is an optional user setting) so that you aren’t prompted to verify your account every time you sign in from a new device or location.

Your Advertising Could Take a Hit

When Google’s security measures present these kinds of problems, your advertising efforts will suffer greatly. If you’ve hired an online advertiser, they won’t be able to claim your listing and, therefore, won’t be able to optimize your local search performance. Not only will they not be able to do their job, but they could potentially get blocked from your listing altogether if they try accessing it without the proper credentials. Even if you’re performing your own advertising, you won’t be able to do much if you can’t log in to your own account.
Here’s the bottom line: If you can’t log in to Google, you can’t manage your listing. If you can’t manage your listing, you can’t keep it updated to ensure it matches all of your other online content. If your Google listing doesn’t match your online content, your local search performance will take a serious hit.

READ: Why a Team of SEO Specialists Is Superior

Last Updated: July 9, 2015

When searching for an online advertising provider, business owners must decide between hiring a single SEO professional or hiring a team of SEO professionals. As with any scenario, there are pros and cons for each side. However, according to Jayson DeMers’s latest column on Search Engine Land, “The Case for Niche SEO Specialists,” a team of SEO specialists is the best choice.
SEO concept 2
Essentially for DeMers, it boils down to whether you want a jack-of-all-trades operating on his own or a group of masters working together. DeMers calls solo professionals “generalists” because they have a well-rounded, generalized set of SEO skills. However, generalists don’t have the in-depth knowledge or precision that experienced specialists have. According to DeMers, since they haven’t spent a great deal of time perfecting any specific skill, it takes them longer to perform tasks and keep up with the field’s latest advancements. Due to their lack of experience, they’re also not as quick to diagnose problems or create solutions.
On the other hand, a team of specialists will typically have a designated specialist for each task. Content writing, site designing, link building, social media maintenance, and local reputation management are each delegated to their respective specialists. This ensures that each task is executed efficiently and accurately.
DeMers concludes:

When you start using niche experts to execute your business’s SEO strategy, you should notice an almost immediate difference. You’ll worry less about your performance on individual tasks, and you’ll see a bigger picture perspective on how everything else ties together.

Prospect Genius is proud to be such a team. We have separate writing and development teams driven by talented specialists who know the ins and outs of their niches and can perform their jobs with total precision.

7 Signs That Call From Google Is a Scam

Last Updated: May 14, 2015

Cons and scams certainly aren’t unique to the Internet Age, but it definitely seems like they’re lurking around every corner lately. At one time or another, we’ve all received spam e-mails, Facebook messages, and phone calls from individuals who are posing as other people to trick us into giving up our money or personal information. That “Nigerian prince” e-mail chain from 15 years ago may not be circulating anymore, but plenty of other, more convincing scams have taken its place. Scams that involve shady companies pretending to be Google are a prime example.

7 Ways to Spot the Scam

In these Google scams, regular business owners are bombarded with unsolicited phone calls from individuals pretending to be from Google. You should be very wary of any phone call “from Google” if the caller does any of the following:

  1. Tells you that you’re not ranking
  2. Tells you that your site is not mobile friendly
  3. Tells you that your listing is not verified
  4. Offers you a certain placement or position on Google
  5. Discusses your performance on Google
  6. Even mentions SEO or optimization
  7. Asks for money or payment (unless it’s an AdWords pitch)

Google will never, ever call you out of the blue to discuss any of the above topics. Google would not be concerned about improving your rankings or optimizing your business’s listing in any way.
Moreover, if your site is not mobile friendly, you would receive an e-mail or pop-up notification on your Google My Business page directly from Google saying as much. Google wouldn’t go out of its way to call you just to tell you that.
Finally, Google typically doesn’t even call businesses unless they’ve already been verified by PIN, so you can ignore any phony caller who’s posing as a Google representative and telling you that your listing is not verified.

What Do Legitimate Google Calls Look Like?

First of all, the only two numbers that we know to be associated with Google for unsolicited calls are (650) 253-0000 and (650) 253-2000. These are the only two legitimate Google phone numbers we’ve seen in our seven years of operation. However, if there are any other authentic Google phone numbers out there, they will always have a (650) area code (for Mountain View, CA).
If Google does call you unsolicited, it will be an extremely rare occasion, and it will only be for one of two reasons:

  1. Google might call about your Google My Business listing for quality control purposes. The caller will just ask you about the information on your listing in order to confirm your service offerings, physical address, and other pertinent info. This is standard procedure as Google wants to ensure the accuracy of the information it’s publishing (after all, its credibility is on the line). These calls typically come from one of Google’s outsourced call centers overseas; the caller will most likely have a foreign accent.
  2. Google might also call you to sell AdWords or AdWords Express. These calls will be obvious sales pitches for AdWords, and they will not discuss rankings or positioning on search results pages. Furthermore, these calls will be from one of Google’s domestic headquarters; the caller will most likely have an American accent.

Again, it bears repeating that Google will never try to optimize your website or Google My Business listing. It’s okay if the caller asks you about information on your listing as a way of verifying what’s already in the system, but your guard should go up as soon as they start asking you for your credit card number or other sensitive information.

What If It Feels Like a Scam?

If any red flags appear to you during the phone call, simply ask the caller directly if they are from Google. If they answer you by saying that they “work with” or are “partners with” Google, then they’re clearly trying to skirt around the question.
It’s important to note that many second-rate advertising companies will claim to be partners with Google. This terminology is misleading because it makes it sound like the company has a special deal or affiliation with Google—but that’s not the truth at all. When an advertising company brags about being a Google Partner, it really just means someone from that company passed Google’s AdWords and Analytics exams online. Any advertiser can become a Google Partner. If an advertiser tries to use this certification as a way to trick people into believing that they have a special relationship with Google, that should tell you they represent a dishonest company, and you should act accordingly.
However, if you’ve received a phone call from a true scam artist—not just a desperate advertising company—then there’s a chance they will lie and claim that they are indeed from Google. In these cases, it’s critical for you to trust your instincts. If you’ve gotten a bad vibe during the conversation and the caller has raised any of the red flags explained above, then you should not trust them. Instead, you should terminate the phone call and report it to one of the many online scam alert websites.

The Do's and Don'ts of Expanding Your Campaign

Last Updated: February 15, 2024

Thinking about expanding your Prospect Genius campaign in 2015? It’s not uncommon for clients to want to take their campaigns to the next level after being with us for a certain amount of time and achieving a certain level of success. You want to see how far you can take your online advertising campaign, and we can’t blame you!
You should feel free to make upgrades and additions to your Prospect Genius campaign, but be careful: more does not always mean better. Here’s what to do and what not to do.
Good vs. Bad

Goal: Expand Service Offerings

If your goal is to expand your service offerings…

DO NOT just add any old service to your site.

It may be tempting to stack up your services as a way of offering the widest selection possible, but that strategy could actually backfire. Google likes specificity. The more laser-targeted your offering is, the more credible you’ll be in Google’s eyes. Love it or hate it, it’s just the reality of dealing with Google and their expectations. Google likes to put things in tidy boxes, so even if you do offer an eclectic range of services, your Internet marketing strategy should focus only on advertising what’s relevant to your main category.

DO add specialized service pages to your LeadTrax™ site.

Instead of just tacking on extra services, a more effective way to generate leads from your service offerings is to offer specialty services. Think depth over breadth. By offering a specialized service like Samsung or LG appliance repair, you’ll be able to capture attention from prospects who have highly specific needs and corner that niche market. Google likes this approach, too, so the hyper-specific search terms targeted by these pages rank really well. We’ve had many clients see fantastic success by adding specific brand pages and specialty pages to their LeadTrax sites.

Goal: Expand Your Market

If your goal is to expand your market or service area…

DO NOT create a fake Google listing.

If you want to reach a different geographic area, do not under any circumstances create a new Google My Places listing with a fake address. It may seem like a shortcut to getting listed in a different area, but this trick would only work if you actually had another physical location at that address. Google uses Google Earth technology, their own cars, and even local volunteers to check out new listings and determine whether they’re valid. If you try to pull the wool over Google’s eyes, you’ll pay the price with a suspended or penalized listing (which can take up to 12 months to rectify). So while faking an address may give you a temporary improvement in rankings, it’s not worth the risk of what could be a year or more of penalties and other problems.

DO use a pay-per-click campaign.

This is the smarter alternative to creating a fake listing. Did you know that pay-per-click (PPC) isn’t as geographically limited as organic SEO is? That means adding our PPC package to the mix will help you to expand your geographic market, regardless of whether you’re already a Prospect Genius Core member or you’re using one of our à-la-carte services. While local search is dictated by the address on your Google listing, PPC is much more flexible. You get to decide on how broad or narrow your targeted geographic area is. For example, you could choose to target ads specifically at Schenectady, NY, or you could choose to widen your ads’ reach to all of Albany County. It’s totally up to you. In other words, PPC will allow you to reach a wider audience without hurting your organic local search rankings.

Goal: Maximize Results From Online Advertising

If your goal is to get even more out of your online advertising efforts…

DO NOT use two SEO companies.

You might think, “My campaign is doing well. I’ll add another one to get even better results!” That couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to SEO. While combining organic search optimization and paid search optimization typically generates great success, combining two organic search campaigns from two different providers will do the opposite. Working with two separate SEO companies at the same time will essentially sabotage both your campaigns. Read more about this in our blog post, “For SEO Companies, Two’s a Crowd.”
This principle applies to all forms of online advertising: You don’t want to hire two different companies that provide the exact same services. Whether it’s two SEO providers or two social media specialists, they’ll counteract each other’s work, get in each other’s way, and create a disaster for your web presence.

DO leverage social media.

If you want to get more out of your online advertising without sabotaging your own campaign or paying for PPC, then optimize your social media presence. By leveraging all the social media tools available to you for free, or even taking advantage of our specialists who can do the work for you, you’ll be able to reach customers in a whole new way. Not only will you be able to spread the word about your business more efficiently, but you’ll also create a terrific showcase for your business’s unique personality. When prospects get a glimpse of what your company is about and see that there are real people behind it, they’ll be much more likely to connect with you. Plus, the more “Likes” you have on Facebook and followers you have on Twitter, the more credible your business will seem to prospective customers.
To that end, consider taking advantage of Prospect Genius’s SocialStart or SocialStream packages. If you’re looking for an even greater push, we also perform Facebook ad campaigns that will boost your posts and get more “Likes” for your page.

Always Ask Questions

If you want to expand your campaign but you’re having trouble setting goals or deciding where to start, give us a call! We’re always happy to discuss your company’s needs and work on a solution that fits perfectly.

Avoid These Online Advertising Pitfalls

Last Updated: February 15, 2024

While the world of online advertising is rapidly advancing, most experts still look at it as the Wild West. There aren’t too many standardized methods set in stone, and there sure are a lot of entrepreneurs trying to carve out a niche for themselves. In the spirit of independence and getting rich quick inherent to the American frontier, some dubious online advertisers have developed and perpetuated ways to cut corners in hopes of seeing faster results. Spoiler alert: They usually don’t work.
The problem is, most of these are pitfalls that well-intentioned business owners fall into when handling their own marketing campaigns. That’s why we’re focusing this post on some of the major traps that all business owners like you should avoid when traversing the unfamiliar territory of online advertising.

Don’t fall for the temptation to falsify addresses or reviews.

It may seem like an easy way to get ahead on Google+ and Google+ Local, but that’s a lot of risk for no reward. Google will always uncover the truth. For instance, if you try to place your company in a better location by using a fake address, Google’s street-view images will immediately tell them whether or not your business is actually located there (they have an image for virtually every address in the U.S.). Additionally, Google will mail a postcard to that physical address as a means of verifying that you actually work or reside there.
Similarly, business owners often fabricate customer reviews on their Google+ Local listings to pad their reputations, but Google can easily detect when multiple reviews are being posted from the same IP address, or if reviews are posted from IP addresses outside the expected geographical area.
When—not if—Google catches you perpetuating inaccurate information, they’ll likely suspend your listing and penalize your rankings. They have a zero-tolerance policy for black-hat tactics like this. Simply put, getting a quick boost for your company’s website is not worth the highly probability that you’ll get caught and cripple your campaign for months.

Don’t fall for assurances that two SEO companies can work together.

If you’re already working with one SEO company, you might still find yourself in a position where other SEO companies are trying to get your business. In their attempts, they might assure you that you can work with them and your current SEO company at the same time. They might even tell you it will double your success. None of that is true.
We wrote extensively about this in a previous post, so here’s the gist: Two companies will inevitably sabotage each other. It won’t be intentional, but it will be inevitable. Why? Because an SEO company must have exclusive access to all directory listings, social media accounts, and other listings in order to make updates whenever necessary. If two companies have this level of access to all the same accounts, they’re going to put out conflicting messaging, redundant information, and even duplicate content. Plus, Google will certainly notice if regular changes are coming from multiple IP addresses and will flag your listing for suspension.
Working with more than one SEO company at a time will unavoidably result in a suspended listing or plummeting rankings.

Don’t fall for free trials from SEO companies.

SEO must be customized in order to be effective, and the amount of work required upfront cannot be provided for free.
SEO is not conducive to free trials because it requires several weeks’ worth of detailed, back-end production that cannot be reused, resold, or repurposed for another company. SEO’s custom nature means it’s tailored for you and you alone, but it also means that the company providing the SEO work would be left holding the bill for all of the time and resources consumed if they were to offer a free trial.
For that reason, free trial offers are almost exclusively for directory-style services that only require listing your basic company information. There’s nothing inherently wrong with using directories, but it’s simply not the same as SEO. Directories list you and your direct competitors on the same page, and there’s almost no way to help you stand out from the crowd. Instead, every listing gets the same exact treatment.
Think of directory services as a hotel and an SEO company as a custom home builder. If you wanted a free trial for a hotel room, it would cost the hotel very little, as the system is built on high turnover and uniform services anyway. If you wanted a free trial for a house, however, the home builder would lose a staggering sum of money if you didn’t pay them. They would have constructed a house from scratch that they can’t resell because it was based on your specific design preferences.
The bottom line? There’s nothing in this world that is both custom and free.

Don’t fall for the hype surrounding Google Partners and AdWords certification.

Many upstanding, reputable companies may be certified affiliates, but this title does little to distinguish between effective and ineffective companies.
To receive AdWords certification, an individual must join Google Partners and pass at least two separate AdWords exams. AdWords certification is a stepping stone toward becoming a Google Partner, a title that’s offered to companies with at least one certified individual on staff and a few other qualifications—namely, a demonstration of best practices, a fulfilled AdWords spending minimum, and a complete company profile.
These are objective rubrics that most companies with sufficient resources can achieve. That means there can be vast differences in effectiveness between companies that are AdWords certified and/or Google Partners. Furthermore, a company only needs to be loosely affiliated with a certified individual in order to be considered a Google Partner, so prospective customers need to ask whether the certified individual is going to be the actual person working on their account.
In other words, a Google partnership or certification offers no way for a prospective customer to know if the company they’re dealing with is actually going to get them the results they need. Rather, these titles only serve to create the appearance that Company A is somehow affiliated with Google or has influence on things like rankings and algorithms.
In reality, a Google partnership or certification only proves that Company A is real, knows the basics of AdWords, and pays Google a substantial amount of money for AdWords.

Don’t fall prey to deceptive advertising schemes. If you have questions about a certain practice or company that seems suspicious, don’t hesitate to direct those questions to Prospect Genius. Our campaign coordinators and account managers are always eager to answer your questions and provide expert guidance whenever possible.
