For SEO Companies, Two’s a Crowd

Last Updated: February 15, 2024

At Prospect Genius, we’ve seen countless businesses destroy their Internet presence by working with more than one SEO company at the same time. To hardworking small business owners, doubling their efforts just makes sense, especially with the logical assumption that extra manpower and resources will generate even better results. Unfortunately, online advertising is unlike most other business ventures. With more than one SEO company on the job, you could actually be harming your prospects, not helping. Here’s why.

Two Heads Aren’t Better Than One

Think about it this way: You wouldn’t hire two real estate agents to sell your house. You wouldn’t hire two appliance repairmen to fix your broken refrigerator. You wouldn’t hire two moving companies to move boxes and furniture out of your house. The real estate agents would have different marketing strategies in mind, the repairmen would have two different techniques for performing the same job, and the moving companies would literally get in each other’s way. Plus, in each of these scenarios, you would be paying twice as much for a job that could easily be done by just one company.
The same logic applies to hiring two separate SEO companies to advertise your business.
When you have more than one SEO company working on your online advertising campaign, conflicts are inevitable. Why? Because every company has a unique approach to SEO and a rigidly structured process that must be followed in order to support that approach as effectively as possible. An SEO specialist must have unrestricted access to all of your business listings in local directories, social media sites, and local search engines. Having more than one company editing your accounts could lead to inaccurate information, conflicting messaging, and even duplicate content. This is true even if one company does SEO and the other handles social media because, with Google’s latest algorithms, social content is now merging into SEO territory.

A Lot of Risk for No Reward

Conflicting activity is particularly detrimental for listings on Google+ and Google+ Local. As it attempts to prevent spam, fraud, and other black-hat tactics, Google is very watchful of its users’ activity. If your business listing is being edited from multiple IP addresses and is revised too frequently, it will be flagged or, worse, suspended. A penalized or suspended listing is extremely difficult to recover from, and the recovery process usually takes about six to nine months. During that time, your web presence will be virtually nonexistent, and these days, you simply can’t afford for that to happen.
So don’t take your chances—simply stick with one SEO company at a time.

You Have to Commit

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to settling on just one SEO team is the fact that online advertising is not yet a matured market. There’s no standardized SEO method, which means you can’t be certain that you’re going to get an effective Internet marketing campaign. Compare this to a matured market, like appliances. When you go to the store to buy a vacuum cleaner, for example, you can be reasonably confident that the item you end up purchasing will work on a very basic level. But because the online advertising market is still in its infancy, you can’t assume that you’re going to receive quality SEO services from any given company. Instead, you have to hire a company and wait and see if you eventually get your desired results.
This leads many small business owners to experiment with multiple SEO companies. If the first campaign isn’t working, why not add a second one? The “all hands on deck” approach is certainly understandable for business owners and service providers who are accustomed to completing large-scale jobs on a tight deadline—but in the world of Internet marketing, the fewer hands, the better. You have to decide which marketer will provide you with the best results and stay exclusively with them. However, since it’s not a matured market, you can’t just go with the lowest price and expect sufficient results. You actually have to do your research by talking to multiple companies about their services and seeing which one fits your marketing goals best. Honesty and a proven track record should be at the top of your list of traits to look for.

Honesty Is the Best Policy

While adding a second SEO company is a bad idea, it’s not the worst thing you could do. The worst thing you could do is to add a second company to your campaign without disclosing it to either party. We’ve seen this happen numerous times, and it always ends poorly for everyone involved, particularly the business owner. When SEO companies aren’t aware that another team is on the job, they’ll spend extra time and effort combating each other’s work without even knowing it. As we previously explained, each Internet marketer has their own unique plan, and they won’t be able to execute it if another marketer’s plan is inadvertently sabotaging it. That means your waiting period for leads and rankings will last even longer. Plus, if you hide one company from the other company, then they’ll both make mistakes with Google that could have otherwise been avoided. These missteps on Google’s territory will inevitably lead to serious depreciation of your web presence, which will take the better part of a year for you to restore.
Ultimately, with two SEO companies on your payroll, you’re spending twice as much for a greater headache.
So, if you’ve been working with a different Internet marketer for a while and you’re satisfied with their results, then please—please—don’t hire us, too. At the very least, don’t lie to us. On this point, we speak for all honest SEO teams.

Online Presence: Keep It Consistent

Last Updated: February 15, 2024

As most companies with an online presence already know, your Google+ Local listing is a vital part of your web advertising campaign. But, unfortunately, it’s one of the trickiest to handle. With Google’s quality guidelines undergoing constant revisions, your listing is at risk for receiving a violation—and all the negative consequences that go along with it.
At Prospect Genius, we deal with Google each and every day, and, with the help of our in-house Google expert, we’re able to stay in the loop about all of Google’s updates and how they might affect your online advertising efforts.
Perhaps one of the most important steps you can take to ensure your Google+ Local listing is active and displaying the correct information about your business is to make sure that your online presence is consistent elsewhere. How can having the same information on other sites affect your Google+ Local listing? Well, because Google uses information from all over the web to check your business’s listing. That’s because if Google only used the info submitted through business accounts, they’d end up with a ton of false and spammy listings. To guard against this, they gather data from all over the web. If this process doesn’t give them a good enough picture of your business, they might even call you up to verify the accuracy of your info!
So, how can you work to make certain your online identity is consistent?

  • The first, and most important, step is simply ensuring that you’re promoting all the same information online. That means using a consistent URL, phone number, company name, and address in all of your web marketing and online advertising efforts—and making sure that your online advertising company is doing the same thing.
  • You’ll also want to make sure that the information displayed on your website and the information on your Google+ Local listing is the same. It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised! We come across this problem with clients all the time!
  • Stay on top of company changes. If your business has moved, changed its name, switched phone numbers, etc., be sure to update that information everywhere it appears online. Having conflicting info on the Internet will only undermine your chances of online advertising success.

It’s for these reasons that we routinely emphasize the importance of having the same person or company managing your website, Google+ Local listings, and directories. Many businesses run into problems with inconsistent information when they hire more than one online advertising company or switch from one to another.
Don’t know what type of information is floating around about your business? If you’re like many companies, you’ve worked with so many different online advertisers, you don’t know what info is out there about your business, or where to start to find out… The first step is actually pretty easy: search for your business right in Google! But if you don’t have the time to sit down and seek out what info is floating around about your company online, Prospect Genius can actually do it for you. Our convenient WebFax® Report combs the web and creates a report of all the listings related to your company. Rather than sifting through pages upon pages in Google to find this info yourself, you can let us do the work and then just look over one simple report.
Dealing with a mess? If you’ve discovered that your online presence is anything but consistent, it can be hard to know how to go about cleaning it up. Unfortunately, the process of removing inaccurate information from online business listings can be a huge drain on your time. Many directories don’t allow you to simply delete old listings, and others use a written removal request process that can take weeks. But you can save yourself time and hassle by letting PG do the leg work for you. With our CleanSlate™ Program, often used in conjunction with a WebFax Report, we will slog through all of the necessary steps to remove your business’s old or inaccurate information from the web. Once we have completed our job, we’ll even provide you with a report summarizing the results.

Why It’s Worth the Trouble

Sound like a lot of effort to go through just to maintain a consistent online identity? Wondering why you should bother?
Well, the answer is easy: Not only will a single online identity help your Google+ Local listing, but it will also assist your customers, so it works doubly to help your company.

  • Once you have a single online identity, Google will give your business more value. That’s because they’ll have less trouble verifying that your Google+ Local listing is accurate and that your website is a quality resource for searchers.
  • By maintaining consistent information everywhere on the web, you’ll also benefit because potential customers will no longer be directed to old phone numbers or dead URLs. Think of all the business you could be missing out on!

With a single, consistent identity on the web, your online advertising tactics—and your company as a whole—will simply have a greater chance of success!

Prospect Genius Reports Continuing Growth, Hiring

Last Updated: August 1, 2012

Despite weak jobs growth nationwide, Prospect Genius is pleased to announce the continued expansion of their local online marketing firm. This search engine optimization company, based in Troy, New York, has seen a 20% growth in full-time staff during the first half of 2012.
With new positions created in the sales, content management, and administrative departments, PG is registering development across the board. The July 9 addition of Jeff Pechenik, filling a new content specialist slot, represents the latest addition to the company.
As PG President Alex Pelli comments, “With the massive growth of the sales team, we’ve also had to increase our staffing levels in the back office. Adding Jeff to the group means our content specialists won’t be stretched as thin. Our goal is to give each client top-quality, individualized attention, and increasing the size of our content management team makes certain our clients get the service they deserve.”
Prospect Genius’s growth parallels the increasingly large demographic that relies on online sources for information. Some 91% of adult Internet users report using a search engine to locate info on the web, according to a February 2012 Pew Internet survey. With the increasing size of this online advertising audience, it’s not surprising that more small companies are in the market for Internet marketing tools. Prospect Genius partners with these local businesses to provide SEO solutions to connect with online searchers in their communities.
Pelli explains, “Demand is increasing for effective online advertising. We’re growing to help more small companies harness the Internet to reach out to local prospective clients.”

Prospect Genius Announces Creation, Filling of Sales Manager Position

Last Updated: July 31, 2012

As the latest hire in their continuing expansion, Prospect Genius has recently brought in Mike Coleman for the newly created role of sales manager. With the late-June addition of this position, Prospect Genius has now doubled the size of their sales staff since the beginning of 2012.
Alex Pelli, president of Prospect Genius, explains, “As the sales team has increased, we felt it was important to bring in a manager who could make sure these folks were getting the support and guidance they need.”
The sales manager position was developed to sustain, strengthen, and expand the sales team through the leadership and guidance of this experienced sales and advertising executive. With a background in sales going back to 1997, Coleman brings with him extensive experience in both marketing and management. Melding his expertise in customer relations, calling strategies, and training with Prospect Genius’s hallmark model of integrity in online advertising, Coleman’s role is primarily designed to help existing and future account managers as they help clients.
As Pelli states, “We were presented with the opportunity to bring Mike on and we jumped at it. One of his major directives is to grow the sales team through recruiting high-quality people as well as to help equip our current account managers with the tools they need to maximize their success.”
In taking the reins as sales manager, Coleman will be working alongside the rest of the PG sales team to reach out to local businesses and service providers to help them achieve their online advertising goals.

Quality Photos = More Phone Calls!

Last Updated: February 15, 2024

We’ve talked about this once or twice before, but having photos on your website is so important, I’ve decided to revisit the topic again. Here’s why:
Studies have repeatedly illustrated that when a website features good photos, it performs better than those without. But, beyond the realm of research, here at PG, we see that rule of thumb play out among our clients every day. Customers who send in photos for their websites really do get more leads and overall better performance for their sites!
If you still don’t have images on your site, or you only have low-quality, stock photos, it’s never too late to make changes. You only need a handful of great pictures to make a difference for your webpage, and the old adage, “Better late than never,” certainly applies.
So what kinds of photos work best? I’m glad you asked, because great photos ensure you reap the maximum benefits.
Staff photos: Group shots of you and your team are a great way to literally put a face on your company. Take the photo standing in front of your shop, or get your technicians company shirts for an extra-professional touch. Staff photos can help make prospective customers more comfortable with your company, making them more likely to hire you, especially if you’ll be coming to their home for a job.
Kids and pets: Everyone loves a cute kid or two. If you run a family-owned business, a family photo is a great option for your website. Just be sure to work in some sort of company branding or tie-in. That can be as simple as miniature company shirts for the kiddos, but other options include adding your business’s logo to the image or taking the picture at your workplace.
Action shots: Pictures of you and your staff at work can show prospective clients exactly what it is you do, helping secure that ever-important peace of mind. Before and after photos can also make a powerful statement about the quality work and outstanding results you provide.
Community involvement: If you support local charity events, sports teams, or other community programs, take advantage of that involvement and put pictures up on your site. Your prospective clients are also members of the community, and most would rather support a business like yours that volunteers to help out neighbors and charitable organizations than one that doesn’t.
Logos: These aren’t photos, per se, but a simple logo can add that final touch of polish to your site as well as make your company’s name memorable.
Remember, not all photos are created equal. While all of the above ideas for images on your webpage can help your site—and your company—succeed, stock photos don’t do much to help you get ahead. The fact of the matter is, most people can pick out a stock photo a mile away. Since images are supposed to add a personal touch to your site, display your work, and make prospective clients more comfortable with YOU, stock photos pretty much fail to accomplish a single one of these goals!
